304 or 316 grade: which do you need?

Both grades are austenitic stainless steels: non-porous, heat resistant and easy to keep hygienic. The difference is corrosion resistance. 316 contains molybdenum, which gives it much better resistance to chlorides, acids and aggressive cleaning chemicals.

Choose 304 for Choose 316 for
Domestic kitchens Laboratories and science classrooms
Commercial kitchens and catering Coastal and marine environments
Food preparation and food technology rooms Areas cleaned daily with chlorine-based or acidic disinfectants
Most healthcare and education settings Food processing with brines, acids or high salt content

If you are not sure which grade your project needs, tell us where the worktop is going and how it will be cleaned, and we will recommend one.

Customise your stainless steel worktop

Every DSM worktop is built to your drawing, so you can combine any of the options below in a single piece.

Integrated sinks and bowls

We weld sink bowls directly into the worktop and grind and regrain the joint, so the finished surface has no rim, seam or sealant line for dirt and bacteria to collect in. Choose from round hand wash bowls, single and double rectangular sinks, deep sinks and half bowls. See our stainless steel worktops with sinks and drainers.

Drainers

Pressed or indented drainers can be formed into the worktop next to the sink, falling back towards the bowl so water does not run off the front edge.

Upstands and splashbacks

A rear upstand can be folded up from the same sheet as the worktop, which removes the joint between worktop and wall. For full height protection, we also make matching stainless steel splashbacks.

Hob, cooker and appliance cut-outs

We cut and finish apertures for hobs, cookers, taps and appliances in the factory, so you don't need to cut stainless steel on site.

Curved corners, L-shapes and islands

Worktops can have radiused corners, fully curved fronts, L-shaped returns and finished ends for islands and peninsulas. Rounded corners are standard practice in nurseries, consulting rooms and anywhere a sharp corner is a hazard.

Long runs

We can make single pieces over 5m long. For longer runs we form mechanical joints that pull tight on site.

Edge profiles

Profile Best for
Square front edge Clean modern look, domestic and commercial kitchens
Curved top edge Comfortable front edge for long periods of standing work
Anti-drip edge Stops liquid running down cupboard fronts
Square anti-drip edge As above, with a crisper profile
Bullnose edge Fully rounded, for high traffic and child safe areas
Sharknose edge Slim, angled look on a thicker worktop
Water retaining edge Raised lip that keeps spills on the worktop in labs and wet areas

Pros and cons of stainless steel worktops

Advantages

  • Hygienic: non-porous, with no grout or seams when sinks are welded in
  • Heat resistant: hot pans can be placed directly on the surface
  • Durable: won't crack, chip, stain or rot, and lasts decades
  • Seamless: sinks, drainers and upstands formed in one piece

Things to consider

  • Scratches: stainless steel will pick up fine scratches with use. Over time these blend into an even patina, and a brushed finish hides them better than polished.
  • Fingerprints and water marks: these show more on stainless steel than on matt surfaces, but wipe away easily.
  • Dents: a sharp, heavy impact can dent the surface. A rigid MDF core and the right sheet thickness reduce this risk.
  • Upfront cost: more expensive than laminate, though the service life is far longer.
